Podcast #148 – Becoming Farmers Again

We start this week’s podcast with a 90-second summary of all the events that have distracted us from our work on the farm this summer. We certainly hope most of those distractions are behind us now and that we can return our attention to growing things. On Veg Hill, it’s about beating back the weeds that we’ve allowed to take over, trying to keep up with the burgeoning production from the okra, and breathing a little late-season life into our sad-looking tomatoes.

In the orchard, the muscadines are peaking, and this is the first true production year for them. Now that we’ve experienced the massive berries from the Granny Val, Black Beauty, Nesbit, and Supreme, we’re considering pulling the varieties with small berries and replacing them. On the trails, it’s been a relief to be able to bush hog again, so we’re slowly reclaiming those trails for their real purpose: walking on them!
